One of my favorite memories of Marjorie has to do with packing. She once flew overseas (to Africa, I believe) for a week or more with only a small overnight bag. I remember the people she traveled with were as impressed as I was with her mad packing skills. Marjorie seemed to live the same way: buoyant and baggage free. She and I knew each other because of the Monitor, but rarely if ever lived in the same place at the same time. When her job at the paper brought her to Boston, mine brought me to New York. I will always be grateful to her for renting her apartment to me while I was there. Our paths crossed again recently when I returned to the Monitor. I am so glad to have had a few more opportunities to connect with her about books – and life. For me, Marjorie will always bring to mind kindness – and the idea that we all have the ability to travel light. – Kim C.
