When I met Marjorie, I knew she had a Phd, and I tried to not be intimidated, but found myself choosing my words carefully, worrying about syntax, etc...for about two minutes. That face, with her welcome-mat smile, disarmed and charmed me instantly, and when she told me how much she loved baseball ...BASEBALL!...that clinched it, I was a goner. Even before we married six months later, we hatched an ambitious plan to see a game in every single major league stadium. We joyfully managed at least one per annum in our 15 years together, with a half dozen minor league games from Portland to Pawtucket to Sioux Falls for good measure — even spring training with the Cubs in Arizona. She played catch with me pretty regularly until I surprised her while her gaze was elsewhere ( probably admiring a dog) as my throw soared just above her glove and collided neatly with her eye socket, leaving a technicolor shiner that lasted at least 10 days. I was forgiven, and we continued our love affair with America’s pasttime, and each other. ❤️
