It was the sort of white-out blizzard that made Boston resemble the Alaskan tundra. No one dared venture outdoors. So, naturally, I decided it would be a great time to take a walk around the Jamaica Pond while listening to music through headphones encasing my ears. As I trudged through the snow, head angled into the wind, I was surprised to see another figure appear on the other side of the path. It was Marjorie out for a walk with Sheba. I can't recall what we briefly talked about, but I do remember her warmth on that chilliest of days. Walking in our neighborhood, Kim and I often ran into our close-by neighbor Marjorie—often accompanied by John and her dogs Sheba and then Lucy. If it wasn't snowing or raining, we'd end up talking for 10,15, 20 minutes at a time. (The dogs were so patient.) Marjorie always had time for us and we always had time for her. She's one of those people who would brighten one's day. John and Marjorie had one of those marriages that was a joy for others to witness. An unwaning affection and love for each other. A few months ago, John told me that their marriage felt as it had lasted double the time because it was just so good. They were ideally matched. A blessing to each other and to everyone else who encountered the couple. I loved the outings and visits that we had together, talking about books, movies, theater, current events, and pets. (Sheba, Lucy, Lily and Travis were so dearly loved—the day that Marjorie found Travis on the sidewalk, in bad shape with a broken leg, I know the cat quickly responded to her natural kindness.) I'll miss the many home-baked goods Majorie regularly dropped off...I'll never forget the delicious Swedish Princess Cake that Marjorie once spent half a day making after she'd watched it being made on The Great Baking Show. When I think of Marjorie, I immediately picture her easy chuckle and her big, wide smile. I think Marjorie naturally had a resting happy face. Her grace surrounded her like a halo. And now Marjorie's expressing those beautiful qualities somewhere else. But the effect she had on so many people here remains with us. In memory, her warmth is as radiant as it was that day in the snowstorm. Stephen Humphries
