I mentioned this at the lovely gathering of newsroom folks at the Monitor last week. Although I was on staff from 1984 (ahem) to 2006, I didn't meet Marjorie until she came to Boston. I worked for a time in the Learning section, as both a writer and as an editor, and Marjorie was my mentor and much valued colleague. We lunched occasionally at Steve's Greek and American restaurant on Newbury Street. She always made a person feel as if they had her ear and her attention completely - a rare gift. I always got a big kick out of Marjorie's enthusiasm for the TV series, "Sex in the City," which was probably in reruns by then. I couldn't somehow square the idea of this very dedicated Christian Scientist really enjoying the escapades of these four single women ... but NYC was a character and it WAS her favorite city.... She had a mischievous and humorous side too, which I think was a reflection of her joy and her refusal to take herself or situations too seriously. That infectious laugh! That delightful smile! Even after I left the Monitor, we stayed in touch to some degree, and I could count on her to give me newsroom updates. Last summer, she invited me to become one of her fiction reviewers, which I happily accepted. She continued to mentor me, when I returned to the Monitor to cover for her absence. I had dozens of questions about the Books section, which she patiently, and promptly, answered. I am in awe of her selflessness and grace. I'm so grateful to have known and worked with her! Sending love to John and to her entire family. - April
