I am so very sad to learn of Marjorie's passing. Marjorie and I were college roommates--meeting just after she had returned from her first study abroad in Italy and I had returned from a similar class in Guatemala. We were both in love with all things international--especially from our chosen countries. We spend hours speaking Italian and Spanish to each other, planning future international adventures, and wondering and dreaming about the people we would become. I adored Marjorie. She was smart, enthusiastic, joyful, and she challenged and encouraged me to think big. We took the train together to Chicago, just to walk the city and see the art museum. After college we stayed in close touch for a while, but as we each went through graduate school and became involved in careers on opposite coasts, we eventually lost touch except for facebook and Christmas cards. For years now I have cherished her urbane, hip Christmas cards and enjoyed seeing all the pictures she posted. That intelligent, stylish, playful being always shined through. I know the girl I used to stay up late dreaming about the future with would have been very happy with the woman she became, and with the love of all those who surrounded her. I am so happy that she touch my life.
